• Yip Man / Ip Man (2008)

This is a beautiful martial arts movie with stunning fight scenes that also features some historic drama elements and a slightly philosophical touch which creates a rather addicting potpourri. It's portrait of Chinese culture, pride and rebellion during the Japanese occupation and is starring an authentic and brave main hero and a couple of interesting characters like his proud wife, a brutal bandit who wants to become a martial arts legend or a traitor and translator who works with the Japanese and has some important inner struggles.

Nevertheless, this movie is slightly overrated if you have seen the very similar but more emotional and profound "Fearless" by and with Jet Li a couple of years ago. Ip Man lacks of a profound story, aesthetic details and human passion that the other movie included. It's still an entertaining flick but has not many surprises, intense scenes or parts that may truly trouble you emotionally. You will basically watch this flick for its historic elements and its fight scenes while the acting and the story are rather mediocre after all.

That's why this movie is not as brilliant as its reputation. If you're a fan of Asian martial arts movies, you shouldn't expect anything groundbreaking as there are many better classic and modern flicks of the genre. On the other side, for an occidental viewer, this is still an exotic movie that may grab your attention and that is at least worth a loan at your local shop.

  • Xia Gu Rou Ging Chi Xi Zin / The Master And The Kid (1978)

This movie with actors from Taiwan, Hongkong and China was one of my favourite movies when I was a little kid. I always liked Asian culture and watched a lot of kung fu flicks with my father. While other kids at elementary school watched Hollywood cinema or cartoons, I watched kung fu movies like this one. I remember that I watched this movie at least three times a year with a girlfriend of mine when I was young and we both enjoyed watching this. Lately, I rediscovered this movie and fell in love with it again.

The story is quite simple. Our main hero helps to hang a villain for his kingdom and the father of the deceased swears revenge and kills the entire family of our main hero. Only his nephew survives in a well after a bloody massacre. The main hero swears revenge and wants to know who is responsible for the bloodbath. He quits his job and leaves his kingdom to seek for justice. But his counterpart sets a prime on his head and the main hero has to face many fighters that hope to kill him and get rich and famous. On his way, he must struggle with many enemies and traps as well as with his young and stubborn nephew that follows him everywhere until he meets with his final adversary.

The movie has many strong points. The fighting scenes and the choreographic work are outstanding and many gifted actors are featured on this film. Sometimes, a few fighting scenes are a little bit exaggerated and artificially flavoured but this is nothing unusual to the genre.

The acting is also very well done and features many very cool characters as the ice cold main hero and his courageous young nephew. On the other side, you have an intriguing mysterious man in black and a young and naive fighter and his beautiful girlfriend that try to kill the main hero. The movie is always entertaining and contains not a single minute of boredom.

In comparison to some other critics, I really liked the score of this film. It features traditional Chinese folk music, electronic pop music and some parts of scores coming from different famous series and movies (for example: Once upon a time in the West). The music always fits in a very harmonic way to the different scenes and characters.

The only negative points I might cite in this movie are some exaggerated fight scenes where people are flying across a sea or through trees and some scenes where people in black fight in a dark alley on a moonless night and where you can only guess what really happens. Sometimes, there are also some characters that appear and fight with the main hero for no apparent reason, for example before the final battle scene. But all these points do no harm to this highly addictive flick that any fan of Chinese culture and tradition and kung fu must see. The movie is hard to find but definitely worth your money and attention if you can get your hands on it.

  • Jûsan-nin No Shikaku / 13 Assassins (2010)

13 assassins is a typical Takashi Miike movie with some hints at Japanese history and mythology. The movie has many stunning scenes that will stay on your mind for a while. Already the harakiri opening sequence is quite intense but there is also the scene of a young and crippled woman begging for vengeance and the scene of a family massacre that are really touching and maybe hard to watch for some people. On the other side, there are also some humorous scenes that lighten this movie up in a good way. The filming, the music and the locations are also always well chosen.

The movie is clearly divided into two very distinctive parts. The first half introduces a lot of characters and features many dialogues. As in many other Miike movies, it's not always easy to follow what happens to whom and why but it's less difficult than in movies such as "Family" or "Gozu". I watched this movie with a friend from Asia and I'm relieved to see that it wasn't only me as someone who has grown up in a occidental culture who struggled with some parts of the plot. The movie gives some interesting insights at some characters but should have been more precise at some points.

The second half of the movie is a total massacre in a small Japanese village. The movie features many great sword fights, explosions and original traps. For about forty minutes, the movie gives you no time to breathe but it ends on a rather smooth note after all.

In the end, I think that the transition between the two parts of the movie happens too fast and both are redundant at some points. In the first half, there are too many dialogues and it takes some time to get into the movie. The second half starts with a lot of action but doesn't vary very much and get's a little bit redundant as well. The fighting scenes and choreographs are amazing but forty minutes non stop violence gets a little bit boring after a while. I also think that the final scenes of the movie are not touching or intense enough. I might also add that some parts of the original version had been cut for an international release and I would have liked to see them to understand the characters (for example the bandit that seems to represent an immortal ghost spirit as I read later) a little bit better.

On the positive side, the movie has many memorable scenes, a couple of intriguing characters and great images and words directed by one of the Asian's best directors. Any fan of samurai movies should check this film out. It's far away from being a masterpiece but an interesting release you could loan or buy at a cheap price.

  • Kapitel 22: Donnerstag, 9 Uhr 19, Yacht

„Was wollen Sie jetzt machen?“, rief Mamadou ihm fragend hinterher.
