• Ladies and gentlemen!

Today, I had tons of fun at TagZone Ottawa during one of our school's winter activities. I've played a total of five games. I wasn't particularly good but my team was fun to play with. Shout-out to the other two teachers, my two secondary four students and the students from my German class - it was amazing spending quality time with you. Enjoy the two pictures and videos below!

  • All the reasons why heavy metal is better than jazz have never been as brilliantly exposed as in White Wizzard's music video for ''Over the Top''. Check it out and keep the spirit alive! Make sure to listen to the band's new album Infernal Overdrive, out now!

  • White Wizzard - Infernal Overdrive (2018)

After numerous line-up changes, White Wizzard is back with its classic line-up which sounds quite strange since the band has only existed for about one decade. I hope the band will stay together this time because Infernal Overdrive offers heavy metal as it's meant to be. Passionate melodic and variable vocals meet crunching classic heavy metal riffs, passionately unchained solos, perfectly audible galloping bass guitar sounds and a thunderous drum sound with each instrument and the vocals being produced perfectly.

Most importantly, the band sounds passionate, hungry and fresh as if they were newcomers and not already veterans of the heavy metal revival scene. If this album had been released in the early eighties, this band would easily compete with Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and the likes. It's clearly the best heavy metal revival band out there these days.

Infernal Overdrive convinces from start to finish. The aptly titled title track recalls Judas Priest's Painkiller but also ventures into more sinister verses on one side and a more uplifting guitar solo on the other side. The song is five minutes long and still feels too short, that's how great this vivid heavy metal ride sounds. White Wizzard doesn't slow down and delivers the goods with one killer after another. ''Critical Mass'' opens with a cool radio play sequence and develops into a quite dark and dystopian monster of epic proportions with musicianship that is so insanely good because it finds the right balance between technical skills and emotional energy. My favorite track is probably the epic ''Voyage of the Wolf Raiders'', a heavy metal ride recalling and improving Iron Maiden's To Tame a Land in the best possible way, that lasts almost ten minutes but doesn't waste one single second. Listening to this album will make you feel at least ten years younger than you are, that's how energizing it is.

Objectively, it's difficult to give a higher rating because White Wizzard quite obviously copies some of its greatest idols and won't win a price for creativity for sure. And yet, that doesn't matter at all on this record that will entertain you from start to finish if you have a passion for heavy metal. Infernal Overdrive is a very serious candidate for greatest heavy metal record of the year already and you should purchase this album, crank up the volume and party like it's 1983 all over again. Who cares about the neighbors? Enjoy the wild ride!

  • Black Label Society - Grimmest Hits (2018)

Black Label Society's most recent output is somewhat mistitled. It's not exactly a grim record but a surprisingly diversified effort with a few heavier songs but just as many psychedelic efforts and smooth southern rock ballads. On the other side, nearly every of the twelve new tracks is a hit, so this part of the title fits.

Thanks to this diversified approach, the record almost sounds like a compilation showcasing the band's broad horizon. Even the production is skillfully adapted to the different sub-genres. The heavier songs like the jam-like opener ''Tramped Down'' or the gripping highlight ''Illusions of Peace'' have a noisy, raw and under-produced sound while the psychedelic half-ballad ''The Only Words'' with its floating vocals and progressive rock organ sounds or the epic, hypnotizing and numbing ''The Day That Heaven Had Gone Away'' have a much airier vibe. The vocals are also adapted to each different track as ''Seasons of Falter'' reminds very strongly of Ozzy Osbourne which is a positive thing in this case while ''Bury Your Sorrow'' could come from ZZ Top's very early years to just name two precise examples. In times when more and more old legends call it quits, it's necessary to have a band like this keeping their spirits alive. Black Label Society might not reinvent the music it plays but it pays a highly inspired homage to the legends of yore.

Everything on this record is hold together by Zakk Wylde's skillful guitar play. He meanders between progressive and psychedelic rock with heavy and doom metal as well as a charismatic southern rock influences. Every song includes a heartfelt guitar solo that is often the song's climax. The guitar play and the vocals carry the whole album while the other three band members lay down an unspectacular but highly efficient foundation.

If you like heavy metal, psychedelic rock and psychedelic rock of the seventies, Black Label Society's Grimmest Hits is an authentic trip down memory lane, a first respectable record of the year and a highlight in the band's career.

    Final rating: 84%
