  • Weezer - Teal Album (2019)

Usually, I'm not a fan of cover albums but Weezer's Teal Album is a positive exception. It's obvious that the record was put together rather spontaneously and that the band was enjoying itself while putting this release together.

The spontaneous guideline of the record is supported by softly floating synth pop keyboard sounds, versatile guitar play with heavy riffs and enchanting melodies, a smooth but precise rhythm section and soothing melodic lead vocals by Rivers Como and grittier backing vocals by Brian Bell who performs lead vocals on one of the ten tracks.

The song selection is quite diverse and varies from heavy metal over synth pop to soul. Toto's ''Africa'' is the obvious hit and lead single of the record and has kept the dreamy atmosphere and catchy melodies of the original tune. A-ha's ''Take on Me'' has a similar style. While it is more rhythmic than the original version, it has the comforting spirit of the rock and pop music of the eighties.

Electric Light Orchestra's ''Mr. Blue Sky'' is more diversified, energetic and progressive and shows that the band can also convince in its more experimental moments. The rendition of Black Sabbath's ''Paranoid'' convinces with powerful guitar tone and gritty rhythm section proving that the band can also play a heavier type of rock music.

Ben E. King's ''Stand by Me'' has been covered time and time again, mostly by female singers with thin vocals. Weezer's rendition is particularly great as it has an elegant and epic vibe to finish the record with a bang and Rivers Cuomo is in perfect control of the vocal lines as he proves that he is one of the most underrated singers in the contemporary commercial rock scene.

With a length just above thirty-six minutes and featuring ten diverse songs, Weezer's Teal Album is a particularly entertaining record that sounds timeless and would serve as great soundtrack for any party without lacking depth and style. The band managed to make the different songs their own while respecting the particularities of the original versions. This is the first cover record in quite a while that is worth your attention and you won't be able to stop listening to it for a while.

  • Katatonia - Dethroned & Uncrowned

It seemed like a quite debatable idea to take the vocal recordings of numbing predecessor Dead End Kings and fit them into new acoustic arrangements recalling ambient and neofolk sounds. While the record isn't excellent, the risk payed off as Dethroned & Uncrowned is a solid improvement over its immediate predecessor.

The songwriting has become more concise as the eleven rearranged tunes are more than two minutes shorter than the same tracks on the predecessor. The songs sound concise, fluid and whole.

While the electric guitar work was at times unspectacular on the predecessor, the ambient and neofolk influences on this release add some much-needed variety to the different tracks.

The stripped-down instrumental work also benefits the vocals that sound more diversified, expressive and versatile than on the predecessor even though they are exactly the same. This shows that a good instrumental arrangement is half the battle.

Dethroned & Uncrowned shows the potential these songs have. While Dead End Kings was an average depressive rock record, this new approach is a fluid, focused and fresh reinvention of said song material. This might not be a spectacular release but it's actually quite good and the unusual experiment deserves some recognition. If you like gloomy ambient and neofolk music intertwined with depressive rock and gothic rock elements, you should check this album out. You don't even need to be familiar with the forgettable predecessor to enjoy this album to the fullest.

  • Children of Bodom - Hexed (2019)

Hexed is the tenth studio release of Finnish melodic death metal quintet Children of Bodom. The gap between the underrated predecessor I Worship Chaos and this output is the longest to date with three and a half years. If you expected the band to come around with something spectacular, you might be somewhat disappointed. If you were however craving for more of the same on a high level, you will certainly appreciate this album.

The song writing has become a little bit more concise and less atmospheric if compared to the predecessor. The guitar work has become more domineering and goes back to the band's early output with obvious heavy and power metal reminiscences. The keyboards are used more scarcely but sound quite versatile and progressive when employed at the right moments. The vocals sound the same as usual and the rhythm section could be a little bit more adventurous here and there.

The record's first half is particularly strong. ''This Road'' is a concise opener with great melodic guitar play and progressive keyboard layers that never overstay their welcome. This track might be the band's strongest opener since the atmospheric ''Living Dead Beat'' fourteen years earlier. "Under Grass and Clover'' has cold and industrial verses but catchy and melodic bridges with wonderful guitar harmonies. This mixture shows the band's contradictory yet harmonizing sides and is a perfect choice for a single. ''Hecate's Nightmare'' is the record's most atmospheric track and sounds like a nightmarish lullaby with haunting keyboard melodies. ''Kick in a Spleen'' follows right after and fools the listener with an epic overture before this approach is abandoned for brutal and fast riffs and harsh screams that make for this record's most intense song. This track should find its righteous place on the set list for upcoming tours.

The record is not without its flaws however. The second half loses some steam and especially the last three regular tunes can't compete with the excellent first half and great middle section. The new version of ''Knuckleduster'' can't compete with the original version and the remix that closes the album is nervously noisy electronic music that makes push the skip button within seconds. This final song also includes a short hidden track that doesn't add anything to rate the record up either. The two live tracks feel out of place as well and a regular live release thirteen years after Chaos Ridden Years - Stockholm Knockout Live would be a more welcome addition to the band's discography. This record should simply have ended with the tenth track instead of watering it down with seventeen minutes of unnecessary filler material. If the band had been asked to absolutely record bonus material for the limited edition or the Japanese version, the quintet should have stuck to its usual cool cover songs.

In the end, Hexed is neither among Children of Bodom's greatest nor among its worst hours. The first half of the album is creative, energetic and melodic while the second half loses steam and the tracks of the limited edition are bearable. The overall sound with more guitar duels and efficiently employed keyboard sounds goes back to the group's earlier records which will please fans of old date. Those who have never quite liked the band won't become fans with this album either. Children of Bodom's Hexed is a good genre release but not worth a mandatory purchase.
