暴君 / Bloody Tyrant - The Overture of Sun-Moon Lake (2012)

Bloody Tryrant is another quite diversified extreme metal band from Nantou County in Taiwan. Last year, the band released its EP "The Overture of Sun-Moon Lake" which is available for free on the internet. It can though also be purchased physically and all revenue is donated for a good cause as it goes straight to several Taiwanese elementary schools.

The good cause is not the only valuable reason to buy this release. The band offers some quite stunning extreme metal with progressive Asian folk elements. The riffs are melancholic and heavy, the bass guitar is deep and evil and the drums vary enough as well but especially the folk sounds stand out in here. The vocals are also rather intriguing. Grounded death metal growls meet emotional but never annoying black metal shrieks. The whole thing never gets too brutal and the band elaborates much more on the general atmosphere. The EP contains one amazing instrumental introduction and three regular tracks where the folk driven music is also the main center of attention and attraction.

The slightly epic or progressive death metal parts have a minimalistic gothic metal touch reminding me of early Amorphis or Eternal tears Of Sorrow. The way the folk elements are introduced can be compared to Falkenbach or to other Asian metal bands such as Taiwanese legends Chthonic or the Chinese Screaming Savior for example. The black metal vocals also remind a little bit of the latter bands.

If you like extreme folk metal, you have no choice but to try this band out. The EP is atmospheric, emotional and entertaining. It really makes you want to hear more from these guys after only sixteen very impressive minutes. I have given these four songs at least four spins right now and I'm still hungry for more. As this release is entitled as an "overture" I can't wait for the actual full length majesty. These guys definitely know how to write dark and epic metal with grace and guts.
