• Black Sheep (2006)

This is now already the fourth part of my little review series: Movies that are way better than you expect.

"Black sheep" is a very funny and extremely entertaining horror parody that comes from New Zealand. There are many crazy ideas, hilarious ideas and great jokes as well as a few entertaining characters in this movie. Just switch your brain off and get entertained on a high level. I must admit that I haven't laughed watching a movie a long time ago and this movie must be one of the most hilarious ones I have ever seen.

Take the most innocent animal on earth which is a sheep and make a monster out of it that transforms egoist, capitalist and ignorant managers, scientists or farmers into were-sheep that begin to act and talk in a weird manner. Add to this simple plot a diversified team around an esoteric ecology-terrorist, a tough old housekeeper, a handsome farmer and the main actor and brother of the villain that suffers a sheep phobia and is in therapy to fight his demons. Mix great dialogues with slight gore passages, beautiful landscapes and some action and adventure scenes that are inspired by some great classics. You will be entertained every single moment and live a movie that sticks to the roots of great horror flicks and its parodies but that still offers many original ideas in a unique context coming from an exotic country.

As I have never seen a better horror parody, I give a quite high rating for it even if there is a lot of easy toilet humour, some excessive gore passages and a many stereotypical characters in it. There is so much cheese added to the original ingredients that the final result turns out to be an amazing pizza that should please to almost anybody that is ready to watch some great imaginative but childish entertainment from time to time.

  • Cats & Dogs (2001)

I must admit that I have first seen the sequel of this movie because my girlfriend wanted to watch it in the cinema. Even though the whole thing was quite expensive with fifteen bucks for a movie of one and a half hour with a couple of mediocre special effects and a rather ordinary story line, I think that the follow-up is somewhat underrated because it has many funny characters, a couple of really good jokes and is overall very dynamical. The first part is overrated compared to the sequel as it is only as good as the second movie.

The beginning of the movie is way too long and quite boring. The acting is ordinary and quite predictable and copies a lot of family movies such as "Beethoven" or "Honey, I shrunk the kids". I don't know why a brilliant actor like Jeff Goldblum starred in this ordinary movie. The story itself is predictable and the ending the usual Hollywood kitsch for the (whole?) family that might please to the youngest fans but not to the rest. The connections to many spy movies that would make some adults laugh are much better in the sequel and the laughs of this first movie are simply orientated towards the younger public.

What saves this movies from bad mediocrity are the animals, the great special effects and the overall entertaining qualities. Especially Mister Tinkles as the villain cat and his strange nanny are very funny while the hero Lou can't really convince. The dog Sam and the Russian cat are two amusing sidekicks but the rest of the animal cast is rather boring.

In the end, one shouldn't be too severe with this movie as it is simply done to entertain a young public and surely succeeds from that point of view. The parents will be able to watch it with their children without hating it too much and some younger people that have cats or dogs at home might also like the concept. Anyone else will be more or less entertained with this flick and should rather head for better, more profound and especially more mature animation flicks such as "Toy Story", "How to train your dragon" or "Wall-E".

Anybody that happens to like this movie even though it has some major flaws shouldn't believe the negative hype and watch the second movie as well.

  • L'appât (2010)

This movie must be one of the worst comedy movies ever and is a breakdown after many great films coming from Quebec last year such as "Tough luck", "Incendies" and "The hair of the beast". Every thing about this movie seems to be copied in the wrong way.

An arrogant and intelligent guy from a French special elite must work together with a completely dumb police officer from Quebec. This duality between two very different police officers is nothing new: "Bon cop, bad cop" did an amazing job a couple of years ago and added something fresh and new to the genre and "Father and guns" combined the same idea with an intriguing spy story and complicated relationship between father and son. In this case, both characters remind superficial and can't get any sympathies. The arrogant French guy speaks a lot of different languages throughout the film and one wants to show us desperately how cool and intelligent he is and that's all. The Quebec officer is so dumb that the story is not only rather not realistic but also rather embarrassing. The jokes are predictable and mostly on a very low level. The actors probably do their best but with such a script they simply don't have any chance.

The other actors have the same problem. The black woman that follows the two partners simply tries to look cool and tough. The interactions between the superiors of the partners are doing some incredibly dumb puns on words and have no charisma at all. The bad guy in the story reminds superficial.

The story itself is also anything else than realistic and has got some plot holes. Why did they kill the bad guy in an overcrowded place so that they weren't able to know his secret? Why did they decide that someone should give the black girl an uniform in the most complicated way so that she had to kill the guy who gave her the uniform afterwards? Why didn't they look properly for the secret in the bad guy's house? Why did they ask a strange French guy to get further informations instead of giving the job to the black girl that could have easily seduced the stupid officer and get dumped afterwards? In the end not only the story and the actors are superficial, the whole thing is highly predictable. After a few seconds I knew who the bad guy was. After a few seconds I knew that there was a conspiracy going on. I already had an idea how the showdown of this movie could be and it turned out the way that I thought it would.

The movie simply copies from many other movies but they only kept the predictable stereotypes and failed to add something unique in any way to this weak flick. At least, the movie is quite short as if they had run out of ideas for a proper ending.

But the ending fears me a little bit. The movie finishes in a way that leaves some questions open and might suggest a possible sequel. I hope that Quebec's cinema won't waste any time and money on this plot and return to its strengths instead of reminding of the horrible comedy movies and series they did in the past and that only a few old fashioned Quebeckers might like while the rest of the world would shake their heads and feel embarrassed. Let's just turn the page and praise the last year as a great one for Quebec's cinema as we might ignore this little failure. I would suggest you to avoid this used and abused movie at all costs.

  • Police Academy 4 (1987)

This movie shows us the first signs of decline of the series. The jokes are getting more and more childish and one-dimensional and there are many things and scenes we have already seen in the first three movies. There are no new interesting characters that have been added to the series and especially the young Sharon Stone does a quite disappointing job and even the presence of David Spade and the cameo appearance of the young Tony Hawk don't help in here and are just interesting side notes.

But surprisingly the movie still works as we are happy to meet the old and well known characters again and even if most of the scenes and jokes are predictable, they are still funny and have their moments. When Mahoney and Jones capture two killers with some arrogant citizens on patrol, I really laughed out loud and felt entertained. When Proctor and Harris get fooled over and over again, especially in the toilet scene or the microphone scene, the whole thing is funny as usual even though it is nothing innovating or surprising. While the ending of the third movie and the chasing scenes with the boats was rather dumb, the ending of the fourth part with the air planes is really entertaining and quite spectacular.

On the other side, there are many scenes that are somewhat overlong, ridiculous and boring for example the first minutes of the movie or the ninja fighting scene on a boat in the end. The entertaining parts are though still in the majority.

Anyone who liked the first three movies should also watch this one as the quality only got a little bit lower and as important characters such as Mahoney and Zed are still on board for a very last time and funny as usual. I would suggest to rent this movie and have some fun and finish the series on a higher note. Only the hardcore fans should maybe go further than part four. I would give between five and six points to the movie and ultimately rate it up for this site as the average vote of this mostly enjoyable flick is still way too severe.

  • Scary Movie 4 (2006)

This last part of the series is a good ending even though this flick is not as strong as the third part that surprised with a great acting and many original ideas. I must also admit that some of the movies that are parodied in here are not amongst my favourite ones as it was rather the case in the third part as I didn't like at all "War of the worlds" and "The village" that I found somewhat boring and too ambitious so that I couldn't even laugh about seeing them parodied and accorded further attention. In here, the ideas are a little bit less unique but the jokes are still over the top, especially as Leslie Nielsen plays once again the role of a very dumb and funny president of the United States of America and he alone is worth watching this flick as he adds once again something mature and unique to the series. Especially the jokes about Brokeback Mountain, Million Dollar Baby and Saw are still hilarious.

Even though those series were finally rather childish with a very bad first part, an acceptable and entertaining second and fourth part and a really good third part, I would like to see a true fifth part in the future as there have been many movies in the past years that should be parodied by this sympathetic crew.
