• Police Academy (1984)

This cult movie is a must see for any fan of humorous movies even though it won't beat "The naked gun" series or the Monty Python movies such as "Life of Brian". It's maybe on the same level as the "Vacation" series minus the cultural part of those ones. But this movie deals with many clichés of the eighties and presents a couple of absurd, superficial and yet very funny characters that guarantee for many laughs, slapstick humour and absurd situations. At the end of the movie, you begin to appreciate those simple characters with all their weird behaviours, forces and weaknesses. The story and the reactions of the characters are simple and predictable, but maybe just because of that very entertaining and funny. This is a movie where one might switch its brain off and just laugh out loud as this comedy doesn't take itself so serious.

A positive point about the movie is that there is also some action and some well hidden social criticism in this movie if you take a look beneath the surface. Another plus is the fact that the jokes are not all sexual as many movies of that kind but in fact quite simple but still diversified so this movie is a perfect entertainment for the whole family if you're not too severe and conservative with one or two slightly sexual scenes. That's why I highly suggest to watch this first part of the cult series.

  • Scary Movie (2000)

I know that one shouldn't take this kind of movies too serious and the main public of this kind of films might still be twelve year old boys and girls that are excited to see a movie with many sexual allusions, exaggerated gore scenes and absurd slapstick humour.

The problem that I have with this movie is that the jokes are permanently repeated and quite superficial. You can laugh about fake oral sex scenes in the beginning but when it turns out that every pun of this movie is orientated towards this, it gets quite silly, boring and even somewhat embarrassing. Another bad point is that there are not that many movies that get parodied by this film so that it stays quite one-dimensional all the time and mainly focuses on two well known movies ("Scream" and "I know what you did last summer"). A little bit of diversity would have been more dynamical, funny and enjoyable. The last bad point is the really atrocious acting. The characters are mostly so ordinary and boring that you can't even laugh about them. The next parts of the series have done a better job and included some truly gifted actors like Leslie Nielsen for example.

Nevertheless, this is a short and entertaining movie made for parties to have some good laughs in a good company and where it doesn't matter if you are drunk, stoned, chatting, gone fishing or simply falling asleep during the movie and miss some bits here and there. It somewhat because of those curious twelve year old teenagers that this has become a cult movie as I know many better parodies in that key like "The naked gun" or "Wrongfully accused" but there have also been movies that have been worse like "Epic Movie" or "Meet the Spartians". This is pure entertainment, but nothing groundbreaking or truly interesting. I would call it typically American junk food for the cinematic lunatics.

  • Dans une galaxie près de chez vous - Le film (2004)

This movie is a true piece of Quebec's culture and is based on a very well known and admired television series. This movie has been awaited by many fans and has been popular enough to do a second movie a few years later. This movie is comparable to Mel Brook's "Spaceballs" and I would call this movie a parody of the popular science fiction movies or series where a couple of Quebeckers have to save the world and the whole galaxy.

The story isn't important in this movie as the goal is to laugh about the stupidity and absurdity of the antiheroes that get from one stunning and exaggerated situation to the next slapstick scenery. The weak point about this movie is that many jokes only work if you are yourself a Quebeckers because there are many puns or plays on words, many allusions to the French Canadian culture and the old series. For the fans of the series, this movie is a funny ride and a must see but anyone else will laugh from time to time but won't get all the jokes and allusion in the different situations. Some scenes may even seem to be completely embarrassing or senseless to those who haven't known the series. Another negative point is that the first twenty minutes or so are very funny, original and interesting but a lot of jokes or typical behaviours of the closed minded characters get repeated and become really annoying after a while and you can't laugh about this anymore. The movie is based on many quite superficial jokes and has a lack of variety or originality after a while.

That's why i would only recommend this movie to those who would like to know more about the culture, humour and television of Quebec or for the ones that know and like the series on which the movie is based. Anyone else that expects a great and original science fiction parody may only have a few laughs and don't understand the hype or appreciate this flick. That's why I can only give an average note to this movie after all from a very neutral point of view. Personally, I was disappointed by the lack of originality in this movie after a while though it was at least very entertaining.

  • The best part of the series!

The third Mad Mission movie - a very high paced slapstick parody of the James Bond and other spy movies with some Asian influences - is probably my favourite one of the entire series. Some silly toys of the first two movies have disappeared, the pace is much higher in this movie because of extremely interesting action scenes like on the Eiffel Tower and the jokes are even funnier than before and add a hilarious slapstick style to the movie for example when Samuel Hui plays Tic Tac Toe with cheats in a high secured area or when Carl Maka gets seduced and cheated in the most ridiculous way possible by his friend and a beautiful woman in a restaurant. A very special gem in this movie are the exotic locations for example in Paris and the appearances of some actors of the James Bond movies like Richard Kiel. Only the later Mission:Impossible star Peter Graves is awful and boring in this very entertaining flick filled with action and absurd humour. One can also see that the budget was higher than in the first two movies and most of the action scenes are really well executed.

The only negative point is that the quality of the special effects is very low. You can for example easily see strings when Samuel Hui uses his flight machine to escape after a robbery or when he is fighting in the submarine. You can also see that plastic models of ships or planes are used instead of real material. Another negative fact is that the dubbed versions are really awful.

But those details and this lack of professionalism doesn't change anything concerning the fact that this movie is still very entertaining over twenty-five years after its creation even if some effects, ideas and the story line are very old fashioned but at least in a charming and nostalgic way. I have seen this movie at least four times now and it is still entertaining and memorable in my opinion. So, if you are looking for a very funny and high paced parody of the James Bond and other spy movies with some charming characters, this movie is the perfect choice for you and it is also a good introduction to the whole Mad Mission universe in my opinion. That's why I can highly recommend this movie to anyone that likes action or comedy movies.

  • Jean Dujardin is the master of disaster in this stupid badass comedy flick

A friend of mine told me that this movie was worth a watch and that himself as well as his whole family had adored this funny movie. As I am fan of spy or police parodies in the key of "Mad Mission", "The naked gun" or "Austin Powers", I was looking forward to watch this movie with him.

But this movie is maybe the worst comedy movie I have ever seen because it didn't make me laugh one single time. The main character is an annoying, superficial and stupid racist, sexist and anti-cultural snob that has to investigate on a boring random case along side with boring random characters. I know that the directors exactly wanted to create such a superficial and arrogant character but as I didn't get connected to him, I didn't get connected to the whole movie. The jokes are so childish that it made me despair. You open the lights and some chickens make some noise. You hit a muezzin because he wakes you up in the morning. You hit a partner because he forgets a stupid password. There were so many countless and boring jokes that the story line becomes absolutely secondary and random stuff and the pseudo-twist in the ending is also quite predictable.

I really lost one and half hour of my precious life on this unfunny and annoying piece of garbage. I give one point for the beautiful landscapes and the fact that I was still hoping that there would be a turning point or a really funny scene in this movie which made me watch this until the very end. Well, I was wrong, but at least, I made it through the whole movie. But I wouldn't recommend to any one to live the same fate as I did. Just ignore the influenced and not very objective reviews by some French fans of the main actor (who did a decent job in the cult movie "Brice de Nice"). Give yourself a little gift and watch the "Mad Mission" series or if you want something French, go for "Welcome to the Sticks". Even my girlfriend who normally laughs about anything and adores comedy movies found this one annoying and boring.
