• Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis (2008)

This movie is easily the best French film that has come out in the last years. It is an excellent comedy with the two great actors Dany Boon and Kad Merad but the movie has also its philosophical, dramatical and sad parts.

This movie is extremely funny, it is really difficult to make me laugh but this film made me laugh really hard several times. The best examples are when the postman and his director are having some drinks with half of the town while they deliver the letters or the scenes in the old mining town of Bergues, This movie is extremely touching and emotional. When the excellent Kad Merad tells his new partners and friends about his lies and mistakes, you feel really sad and ashamed for him. The movie's finale is also very emotional and a perfect and really philosophical conclusion.

But the real star of the movie is the whole region, the Nord-Pas-de-Calais, where this movie is settled. This film presents strange and funny accents of the Sticks, their historical and charming towns, their way of living and thinking, their relation to the other parts of France and the clichés and prejudices about both sides. The Nord-Pas-de-Calais is more than just a part of France, it is a country within a country and a culture within a culture. I have been in this region for some weeks during an exchange program and I can tell that those people living there are mostly open-minded, very sympathetic and have many reasons to be proud of their region. I really like this movie as it reminds me of a few very positive and unforgettable memories. And I like the movie because it is different and finally a French film that doesn't present us Paris over and over again. The France is way more than just Paris and there are many beautiful and unique regions and people to discover and this successful and charming movie shows this to all the people out there.

For everyone that is interested in a touching, emotional and simply profound comedy movie or anyone that likes foreign cultures and lifestyles, this unique movie is an absolute masterpiece. I hope that other French regions will follow this example and make similar movies in the future and take the focus off Paris a little bit.

  • Evil Dead II (1987)

One friend of mine, who was normally likes movies that I like, absolutely wanted to show me this movie and said that it would be a funny and very gore horror movie that wouldn't not take itself serious at all. My friend had presented me "Shaun of the dead" and I liked the mixture of horror and comedy in this movie. I also like "Scary movie" and "Final destination", horror movies that go into a funny and ridiculous direction. I even saw movies from the legendary Ed Wood such as "Bride of the monster" or "Plan 9 from outer space" and I thought that they were trashy, but very charming and atmospheric somehow. I think that I can consider myself as an open-minded person that finds this genre of horror comedy at least interesting.

I am really sorry to say this, but this movie is just complete rubbish. I know that this movie wants to joke about serious horror movies but after the first two or three sketches and the first ten minutes of surprising absurdity of this film, the whole thing is just not funny any more and you are waiting that there is some development, something original, something crazy to come, but that isn't the case. The childish jokes are repeated within the eighty minutes of the movie and become really annoying. The acting is particularly bad, the substance of ideas is running low, the dialogs are more than awful, there is nothing shocking or surprising, there are many mistakes in the movie and I could continue this list eternally. I know that those were the intentions of the director, but it is too much of everything and just not funny or entertaining anymore after ten minutes. All the movies that I have mentioned in my introduction are more original and funnier than this piece of garbage. I really tried to laugh, to put myself on a very low and childish level and took some beers during the film in the hope that it would help, but it didn't. It just helped me to almost fall asleep during this so-called cult movie but as I wanted to watch this completely and until the very end, I continued to torture myself. The only other horror movie that I know that is as awful as this one is Rob Zombie's "House of thousand corpses".

Even if some people find this "cult" movie funny and entertaining with its charming trash, I think that this stuff doesn't deserve such a high rating at all, when the other films that I mentioned are mostly rated about at least two points below this movie.

  • Der WiXXer (2004)

This is one of the vary rare funny German movies that I know. But I must warn you from the beginning on as this movie is only interesting if you have seen some of the original, spooky and very charming German Edgar Wallace movies that have been released between the late fifties and the early seventies. Many allusions, for example the names of the characters and locations, the reasons why some scenes have been turned in black and white and even some dialogues refer to those movies that almost every German knows and that are today considered as cult movies. The famous "black abbot" becomes the "coloured abbot", the "green archer" becomes the "stupid archer", the famous "Blackwood Castle" becomes the "Blackwhite Castle" and some new characters as the "ass with ears", "Edgar Wallace's neighbour" and of course the butler "Alfons Hatler" are added in this hilarious movie. In fact, the title "Der Wixxer" is an allusion to the Edgar Wallace novel and movie "Der Hexer" ("The magician"). "Der Wixxer" is an allusion to the German insult "Wichser" which means "Masturbator". That also explains the names of the two inspectors from Scotland Yard "Inspector Very Long" and "Chief Inspector Even Longer". If you don't know any of these movies, you will still get delivered a very funny and entertaining movie, but you won't understand all the jokes. At least, I hope that you might more understand some appearances of certain characters and some jokes with my introduction.

Many extremely famous German celebrities have some really hilarious cameo appearances in this movie like the quiz-master Günter Jauch, the famous television star and musician Dieter Bohlen or the folklore musicians and brothers called Wildecker Herzbuben. They all present themselves in a very ridiculous way and don't mind laughing about themselves. Some of the best and most underrated German comedians played in a really convincing way in this movie like Oliver Welke, Olli Dittrich or Christoph Maria Herbst.

Though the movie is an excellent comedy movie, there is still a very spooky atmosphere, some tension and some action added to the whole thing and the movie never gets boring at all. The movie has been a big success in Germany and a less good sequel has been created a few years later but many people forgot about this hilarious movie. I really think that this movie should be more known outside of Germany as it really represents in a good way a very the funny side and the humour that the Germans certainly have but which many people don't know because it is only the social-critic dramas or "We are the bad Germans" world war movies that have had some success.

If you really want to know something about German humour, German culture and German high society or celebrities, this movie is an absolute must have. If you want to see an original and well done comedy movie, this movie is a must have too. For me, it is probably the best comedy movie of the decade and I must admit that is really hard to make me laugh and I prefer watch other kinds of movie normally. If I think this is funny, comedy movie freaks might just adore it even more.

Don't think about it any longer, just watch it!

  • Y en aura pas de facile (2010)

I went to the cinema without any expectations and was completely blown away by this movie. In the beginning, it seems to be a boring narrative story with too many story lines and changes of space and time, but the more the movie goes on, the more the actors play greatly, the more surprises you get and the more you will laugh! Every actor plays his part in a brilliant way.

The story is not as simple as it seems to be! Réjean writes unauthorized biographies for some stars and adds some interesting and surprising parts to the boring stories of their lives. After this short introduction, he is at home and wants to present himself in a short video to get access to a website where he wants to get new contacts. He tells the story about his life, but sometimes reality, imagination and inspiration from the biographies that he has written seem to mix and the viewer never knows which facts are imagination and which are reality. A good example is the beginning, where Réjean introduces himself as a direct and honest man - but he writes unauthorized biographies and in every different part of his life, he was lying a lot (as he brings the flowers as a youn boy, when he promises to bring the money to the thief when they meet first, when he fakes the marriage demand in the restaurant in the later story and finally when he gives wrong information about the "contract" when he is the rich architect). Throughout the movie, you analyze and think a lot and you really get into this movie! And the story even reserves you a twist or surprise in the end of the movie which you wouldn't normally expect.

Every part of Rejean's life has a lot of funny, emotional and surprising elements, beginning when he is ten years old and lives in poverty with mother who works as a prostitute and meets in a stunning way his future father-in-law and when he falls in love with a girl from school, then when he gets a young adult who has always bad luck in life and who has to confront a desperated thief who could make him rich and his emotional girlfriend without any pity, then when he seems to finds the love of his life in a restaurant who though is a devil in disguise and hides her true personality, then when he is a rich architect who loses his job and his wife in the same day and hires some professionals to kill himself just before he gets suddenly a new contract and his wife comes back to him and finally when he is the old author who wants to know new people on a website.

Many famous actors from Quebec incorporate Rejean at his different stages of life and some more brilliant actors appear in more secondary roles. Because of this diversity of very talented and known actors, the movie never gets boring and because of the complexity of the different story lines, the movie needs and requests multiple viewings to understand the whole sense of the scenario. That is something which I have never ever seen before in a comedy movie! This is what makes this movie a special and sympathetic piece of art and Quebec's culture! And it is even interesting for people outside of the province to get an excellent inside view of the French Canadian cinema. For me, it is simply the best Canadian movie since "Good cop, bad cop" and my favourite movie of 2010 along side with "Shutter Island".

  • Cats & Dogs 2: The revenge of Kitty Galore

I went to the cinema to watch this movie because my girlfriend really appreciated the first part which I've never seen and she convinced me to come with her. She bought the DVD of the first movie and there was a special gift card in it which allowed her to have a reduction of ten dollars on a ticket for the sequel and so we went to the cinema.

I didn't expect anything from this movie and I wouldn't usually comment on such a movie because it is simply not my kind of genre, but as I see now such horrible votes and the movie entering in the infamous top one hundred bottom list, I thought I'd be better if I might write my opinion, because this movie isn't simply that bad - and I am generally kind of severe on movies! While watching this movie for one and a half hour, I've never taken a look on my watch, I've never felt bored at all and I found this movie very entertaining. There were also a lot of nice laughs, especially the naive but sympathetic pigeon was worth the watch - and let me tell you that it is rather difficult to make me laugh. Beside the pigeon, the little girl which always saw the animals making crazy things while her mother didn't recognize anything was an entertaining running gag, too. Another funny thing was the scene in the animal's Alcatraz which I thought was a nice idea. The collaboration, the prejudices and the growing team spirit between the secret agencies of the cats and the dogs were also some really nice elements in this movie even if they were predictable. And the movie even had something philosophical: Cats and dogs put away their prejudices to save their beloved humans together and fight a common enemy. Well, I know, this is a predictable content, too, but still very touching and even teaching for young kids who are watching this movie. And the idea of adapting the world of James Bond to the world of cats and dogs isn't silly at all, but very funny for the kids, nicely done for the adults who understand some funny allusions and certainly better than most of the boring super agent comedy movie in the key of Austin Powers and other boring stuff.

A part of that, the movie is well animated and has a perfect length. People who really like cats or especially dogs might even give a few stars more, for example for the funny and cute video clips in the end of the movie.

Of course, this movie is just a sequel, it shows nothing innovating and the story is predictable and of course there are no twists in the movie, but you can't expect that from any animation movie a part of the amazing "Wall-E". Some people here say that you should put the children into the cinema to watch this movie and head yourself for the - in my opinion - heavily overrated "Inception" - I mean, you just can't compare those movies and if you take this point as a judgement, it is certain that you may be disappointed.

So, don't listen to some of those really ordinary and exaggerated hate comments and spend some ninety minutes with your kids or younger sister or girlfriend or cat/dog fetish, switch your brain off and enjoy the nice jokes and this very entertaining movie.
