• Asgard Legionnaires - Asgard Legionnaires (2005)

This exotic melodic power heavy and sometimes death metal band from Qatar convinces at first try with some amazing guitar solos like in the fast and musically well elaborated "Thee ivy and thy tree" where even the drums are quite tight and diversified. This song is somewhat the highlight of the record while the other songs are musically very solid but nothing outstanding. The longer and very technical instrumental parts of this record that each song has are really enjoyable and show that those guys got some big talent. This album is interesting for any fan of melodic traditional guitar solos with slightly progressive touches.

The only problems in here are the two singers. Let's talk about the singer with the clean vocals first. He tries to do some high pitched notes and almost misses them all. While the recording of the instruments sound raw but clearly distinguishable, his voice is sometimes far away in the background and sometimes too present. It almost sounds like if the singer always misses the moment when he must sing and fails in the manner he should perform. I think this is not a lack of courage but simply a lack of talent. At least, his voice is unique, but his shrieks destroy the epic efforts of his band mates in the worst kind. When he sings less high like in the beginning of "Judas Iscariot", he is at least not disturbing anyone, but the chorus is then another big failure. Sometimes, this guy sounds like a curious mixture of a wannabe Bon Jovi or Rob Halford and then like a squirrel on speed.

In "Asgard Legionnaires", there is a second singer that does some growls that just sound awful as they have no atmosphere and passion and reminds me rather of a fat guy that is vomiting. The vocals doesn't fit at all with the melodic guitar parts and it seems as if a guy from another band accidentally entered the studio and pushed the bad melodic singer away to do some growls.

This sounds just awful and the band destroys all its musical efforts by putting two horrible singers on the microphone. I guess one should take this with humour and simply enjoy the interesting music that saves the record in the end and forget about the bad singers.
