An Average Cinematic Experiment - A Review of Heart Eyes

An Average Cinematic Experiment - A Review of Heart Eyes

Heart Eyes combines slasher horror film tropes with odd bits of eccentric humour and a very light dose of romantic comedy. Josh Ruben's movie tells the story of overworked pitch designer Ally and famed designer Jay Simmons who are asked to work together on a new concept. Their professional meeting is however mistaken for a romantic date by a violent serial killer who is targeting couples on Valentine's Day. The two colleagues must now fight for survival and will obviously also fall in love with each other.

Heart Eyes deserves to be watched once but doesn't offer enough to be revisited. On the positive side, the killing scenes at the very beginning are certainly chilling. The quirky lead characters have a charming side and make viewers root for them. The film's closing twist might not be outstanding by any means but it's at least memorable and offers food for discussion.

This movie however suffers from bland dialogues, an overlong middle section decreasing tension and an unconvincing use of childish humour and superficial romantic elements that simply aren't credible. There is more comedy in the air when a co-worker makes a misplaced joke and there is more romance in the air when I smile at the charming cashier in one of my favourite supermarkets.

At the end of the day, Heart Eyes entertains for about an hour and a half and will soon be forgotten afterwards. Couples should simply go out for a romantic night at their favourite restaurant and horror movie enthusiasts should watch some beloved classics for Halloween. This movie here tries to combine two genres that are hardly compatible and this film indeed fails to add anything interesting to said genres. Heart Eyes ultimately qualifies as an average cinematic experiment.
