After ten years of struggles and survival, the Iraqi based Thrash Metal band "Acrassicauda" finally realized its dream and published its first official EP in 2010. In every second you can hear the talent and the passion of the group and the best seems yet to come.
The four songs are quite diversified but not as exotic or stunning as you might expect from a band with such exotic origins. There are only a few Oriental sound patterns and some of the lyrics are influenced by local stories, personal struggles and experiences and the history of war. But musically, the band sounds rather like a modern version of a typically American Thrash Metal band in the key of Metallica or Heathen. They really do a passionate and solid job without the glimpse of a doubt. The songs all sound different musically and even the singer does some efforts and does some very clean vocals, some harsher thrash vocals and even some grunts but that's maybe the point: The band does not yet have its own special sound and personal note. In every song you have a few memorable and unique seconds (like the Arabian intro and outro of "Massacre") but the band then often decides to build a typical and sometimes ordinary Thrash anthem upon it ("Message from Baghdad" or "The unknown").
"Massacre" and especially "Garden of stones" are the most memorable songs on this first strike. The second song convinces with its Oriental influenced chorus, exotic vibes and slow thrash rhythms while the other three ones are very good material but nothing unique. Let's hope that not only the band history will remain unique but also their music. With a little bit of peace, inspiration and the right support I am sure that Acrassicauda will release some very special and well received albums in the near future. This first EP, though it has a too short running time in my opinion (they should have put out an entire album), is a very important first step to get in touch with the international metal scene but it is not yet a masterpiece of inspiration.
But I would recommand this EP to anyone who would like to have a very exotic brand in its collection or who simply likes solid Thrash metal with a few experiments.
