Ewigheim - Bereue Nichts (2012)

Ewigheim is one of the numerous projects of musicians from the explicit German extreme metal band Eisregen and the famous atmospheric horror metal band The Vision Bleak. While their project Panzerkreutz can be described as atmospheric but quite raw black metal, Marienbad are a slow paced gothic metal band with a big focus on the lyrical concept rather than the music itself.

Ewigheim is a much more accessible gothic metal band that writes rather short tracks with regular song structures containing dynamic verses, catchy choruses and atmospheric bridges. The band employs a lot more electronic elements than the other projects and the vocals are almost always clean even though they vary from dark chants over narrative passages. Allen B. Konstanz from The Vision Bleak convinces with many catchy melodies and a very apeasing voice while Blutkehle from Eisregen employs a more narrative, menacing and somewhat disturbing voice. Even though I prefer the darker clean vocals that remind me a little bit of Type O Negative, I must admit that both voices harmonize well and create an interesting listening experience that never gets boring on this entertaining third output.

Musically, the band varies from heavier tracks that remind me of the Neue Deutsche Härte genre in stuff like “Stahl trifft Kopf” over heavily electronic tracks with catchy danceable passages as in the strong opener and title track “Heimkehr / Bereue nichts” to slow paced atmospheric gothic ballads as the closing “Der letzte Mensch” that works with soft choirs and hypnotizing piano melodies. The biggest hit and most outstanding song on the entire record is though the single “Dürrer Mann” because it has a very addicting melody, a danceable electronic beat and a very diversified vocal performance where both singers deliver an amazing job. The track is filled with little details and requests many tries but I fell in love with this song at first sight.

The only thing that might keep people away from buying, discovering and promoting this solid record are the very morbid and negative lyrics somewhere between suicidal resignation, loads of black humour and rebellion against conformity. Some tracks have truly intriguing lyrics filled with dark poesie and philosophical elements as in “Der letzte Mensch”. The abnd also employs a very unique kind of humour as in “Morgenrot” when the band describes a rotting body covered with flies having sex. “Schmutzengel” touches the euthanasia topic and describes a favourable opinion towards this practice. It’s up to the listener to decide how tolerant he or she is to make it through this kind of lyrics. There surely are a lot of perverted ideas, provocations and negative energy in this album but I think the band catalyse artistically very well all these aspects. The highly depressive hidden track at the end of the album also leaves us on a quite negative note and resumes very well this addicting shocker. Even for someone who likes the gothic scene and its musical diversity, this might be a little bit too over the top. If you’re not German this might not concern you that much but you should still know what you’re listening to.

Apart of this small but important detail, this album definitely is a musically diversified grower with many catchy tracks. What we have here is a good mixture of electronic rock, gothic rock and Neue Deutsche Härte. Many tracks won’t get out of your mind once you’ve discovered them as “Bereue nichts”, “Morgenrot” or “Dürrer Mann”. In the middle of the record, a couple of fillers can be found but no true stinker. I could definitely not listen to this kind of music all day long and this record won’t come close to concurrence my The Vision Bleak collection but I will surely listen to this on a more regular way than I listen to Marienbad for example. If you’re intrigued by this mixture of accessible and catchy moments with quite particular and hard to digest lyrics, don’t hesitate to try this underground band out and make up your own mind.
