Musspelheim - Demo 2007 (2007) - A very promising demo tape - 78% (05/03/12)

Musspelheim - Demo 2007 (2007)

This demo from a rather exotic Viking Metal band from Uruguay reminds of a mixture of Cruachan and Moonspell. The production quality is harsh but gives a rude charm that fits to the topic and this is something I am often missing concerning too polished sounds of superficial party bands such as Turisas, Equilibrium or Alestorm. Musspellheim already sound more credible than the mentioned bands and I would like to hear them on a full length record.

The most convincing things about this demo tapes are the truly epic but not too dominant keyboards that create for example a great atmosphere in the very promising instrumental opener as well as the female singer that is not too often but mostly well used to create a dramatic atmosphere. The male singer is not yet perfectly unique but is able to sing dark narrator passages, epic but always controlled growls and a few black metal shrieks. His growls don't bury the sound of some background chants and the keyboards which is a positive thing. The two singers and the instruments harmonize well together which isn't quite often the case on a first demo tape. The tribal drums in "Sacred land" are also well working and add a folk touch to the epic but harsh metal sound. The song invites to dream along and imagine a true Viking tale in your head and the fact that such a young band is able to do so shows that they have the talent to get further attention.

On the other hand, there is only the fact that the guitar riffs are often repeated and add nothing to the atmosphere as they sound quite ordinary most of the time. The solos are too short and ultimately not convincing. The band might also add something more to their sound to truly stand out of the masses of Viking Metal bands that are quite popular nowadays. I am sure that they have the talent to focus on some special forces to improve their sound and would especially like the two singers to find their own styles as well as the guitar players that need to improve. The bass player in this band also needs to improve as he is simply not audible at all in here.

Finally, this demo tape sounds really promising and I would buy a full length album of this band and hope that they carry on and work on the few negative sides as the positive things are really the majority in here. The four songs grow more and more with each new try and sound truly epic.
