Taking a Break to Enjoy the Beauty of Contemporary Progressive Rock - A Review of Rendezvous Point's Dream Chaser

Rendezvous Point - Dream Chaser (2024)

Rendezvous Point is a Norwegian quintet on the thin line between progressive rock and progressive metal. Dream Chaser is the group's third full length studio effort, includes eight new songs and clocks in at a reasonable thirty-eight minutes.

The quintet can be labeled as progressive metal due to its steady drum rhythms and energetic guitar play. The former provides some additional oomph and the latter flirts with diverse genres such as djent, electronic rock and heavy metal.

The group is also firmly rooted in progressive rock due to the melodious vocals and the domineering use of imaginative keyboard patterns. The former recall groups such as Muse at its peak about two decades ago and the latter remind of bands such as TesseracT about a decade ago.

Positive minds might claim that Rendezvous Point's Dream Chaser could serve as a gateway to the progressive metal genre to progressive rock fans. Negative minds might however claim that this record is a little bit too melodic, polished and streamlined to fully appeal to progressive metal aficionados. Realistically speaking, this album should appeal to listeners appreciating both contemporary progressive rock and progressive metal who don't associate the former with bands that reached their peaks in the seventies and the latter with groups excelling in the late eighties and early nineties.

In order to fully appreciate this record, listeners need to have some patience and should be willing to give this album multiple spins. Just listening to it while doing something else or being in a hurry aren't good ideas at all. At first glance, this album sounds mellow, repetitive and unspectacular at times. At second glance, numerous songs come around with beautiful ideas such as the playful second part of fragile ballad "The Tormented" or the classical coda of moving closer "Still Water".

At the end of the day, I would recommend Rendezvous Point's Dream Chaser to calm, focused and introverted listeners with a weakness for contemporary progressive rock. This record could become a candidate for album of the year for this specific audience. As for everyone else, this album however truly requests a lot of calmness, an open mind and some time to be fully appreciated. For me, this is a record I can appreciate when I only want to relax but the enjoyment of this output is for such a specific state of mind that I certainly won't be revisiting this output very regularly.
