The Corpses Can Rest in Peace - A Review of Corpsegrinder's Corpsegrinder

Corpsegrinder - Corpsegrinder (2022)

George ''Corpsegrinder'' Fisher is a very entertaining, funny and sympathetic musician who delivers the goods for death metal institution Cannibal Corpse that has been releasing records of consistent quality and playing quite enthusiastic concerts since he joined the band for Chris Barnes who has become a disgrace for the genre and even the entire metal scene.

Corpsegrinder's self-titled solo debut however is absolutely unnecessary. It sounds boring, repetitive and uninspired and fails to distinguish itself from the much better material released by Cannibal Corpse.

Ninety percent of this record essentially consist of the following stylistics: menacing mid-paced riffs with tight rhythm section and fast-paced guitar work with bland blast beat overdoses. The bass guitar is almost inaudible and the throaty vocals always sound exactly the same without any variation whatsoever. The different songs fail to be distinguishable from one another except for a few very brief slow, brutal and atmospheric sections such as in the opening moments of ''Death Is the Only Key'', the dystopian distorted guitar sounds right at the start of ''Crimson Proof'' and the nightmarish atmosphere in the dragging overture to ''Master of the Longest Night''. Sure, one can't exactly expect surprising diversity from a traditional death metal record but the lack of creativity, distinction and passion is at times bland, boring and predictable in this particular case.

Adamant genre fans will get exactly what they need here but anyone who has been expecting something special should just stick to regular Cannibal Corpse records. In my opinion, Corpsegrinder's lack of creativity, innovation and passion makes for thirty-one exchangeable, sleep-inducing and stereotypical minutes. The most entertaining thing about this release is its cover artwork. The corpses can rest in peace.
