Warhorse is a traditional heavy metal project initiated by Croatian guitarists, lyricists and songwriters Hrvoje Madiraca and Ante Pupačić along with legendary British punk rock and heavy metal singer Paul Di'Anno who has spent much time in Croatia for medical procedures. The trio's self-titled debut record has been completed with the help of numerous session musicians such as two backing vocalists, two bassists and two drummers.
The complex line-up also explains this record's most significant flaw which is its lack of consistency. The album starts on a high note and the first half convinces throughout but the record is rapidly running out of steam in its second half and thus only just qualifies as a good average heavy metal record for traditionalists.
On the positive side, Paul Di'Anno's melodic yet raw vocals still sound absolutely unique and prove that he has been a dedicated musician throughout his entire life. The guitar riffs are energetic, the solos are decently melodic and the two guitarists have wonderful chemistry. The timeless production blends in very decently. Highlights on this record are energetic opener and title track "Warhorse" and melodic anti-war anthem "Stop the War" that is on the pulse of time.
On the negative side, the session musicians performing bass guitar fail to leave any significant mark upon this record. The same has to be said about the drum play that is serviceable but lacking genuine drive. The backing vocals also sound amateurish and rather decrease the quality of the songs than adding anything interesting to them. The two cover songs on this output are unnecessary filler material to stretch the length of this output.
Despite its obvious flaws, Warhorse's debut album is recommended to fans of traditional heavy metal from the early eighties. It also allows us to listen to legendary singer Paul Di'Anno again who hasn't lost any of his remarkable charisma. May the legendary musician rest in peace.
