uSSSy or УСЫ is a duo of two young musicians from Moscow that have worked together since early 2009 and who have already released four studio records, a split EP, and a live album. “Karpet Birch” is their fourth studio release and the band presents us a solid mixture of dark Ambient music, some Drone influences, and a couple of Doom Metal passages that serve as basis for this strong output. The band created something one could easily call a conceptual record about Middle Eastern folklore. One hears a lot of traditional chant samples and exotic instruments that create a mythic atmosphere. Apart of these chants, the record is completely instrumental. The mixture of short and longer tracks works quite well on this album. In comparison to many similar artists, this band doesn’t forget about the Metal elements and offers some quite fast tracks that even remind me of traditional Black Metal as in the beginning of the energizing “Ai Leili Leili Laleh”. Thanks to these vivid songs and a couple of experiments such as the epic closer “Sacral War” that mixes majestic chants with quite abrupt beats, a blistering drumming and brutal guitar riffs, the record never gets boring. We also find some calmer, longer, and more Folk-driven tracks on here that though have a very dark and disturbing atmosphere as “A Jaraj Melancholic Love Song” for example. If I was asked to compare this band to some other projects, I would definitely put the Russian SENMUTH or also TENOCHTITLAN. If you happen to like this kind of music, don’t hesitate to check the music of this band out on their Bandcamp site under the following link just as I did: http://usssy.bandcamp.com/ (Online September 26, 2012) |
