Red Hot Chili Peppers - Hanalei / Open/Close

This is the ninth and final release of the vinyl single series known as the “I’m With You” sessions by Los Angeles based eclectic Crossover legends RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS. The band opened the series on a high note and now they also close it with a big bang as this is one of the most essential releases of the series.

Enter the once again slightly psychedelic and very appeasing “Hanalei” with its simple but effective instrumental parts, its eerie touch due to a few strange vocal effects and a very distinctive sound of pianos, guitars, bass and drums towards the end. The song is very appeasing and only the engaging chorus breaks a little bit out of these lazy harmonies. I would compare this song to “Venice Queen” and the calmer parts of the “By The Way” record in general.

Then comes “Open/Close,” which is one of the most innovative RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS songs ever done in my humble opinion. Musically, we shift from groovy Funk Rock to Progressive Rock orientated breaks with a children’s choir that could come straight from QUEEN. The vivid and dramatic song is perfectly performed by Anthony Kiedis who sounds more diversified than ever and even reminds me of some characters of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” in the original but eccentric middle part. The courageous song structure reminds me of a brand new version of “Deep Kick” but it’s also comparable to “Death of a Martian” towards the end. Despite these comparisons, this epic song never loses its uniqueness and is a stunning ride filled with overwhelming emotions and technical ecstasy. Even a PETER GABRIEL couldn’t have done it better.

Guess what, the first track is great but the second one on here is a true masterpiece. Fans of original Rock music of any kind should check this out immediately. My advice for you is of course to purchase this final highlight of the series. Thanks to the brilliant RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS for sharing with us your high quality outtakes from a great album. I just can’t wait for a possible new album in 2014.
