• Giallo (2009)

This thriller attracted my attention because of its beautiful location in Torino and the big names of director Dario Argento and actor Adrien Brody. I shouldn't have trusted in those names as this movie is a completely ordinary thriller in every sense of the word. The killer is a poor and isolated guy that has been pushed around and bullied in his childhood and hates beautiful women that he kidnaps, tortures and kills to destroy their fatal beauty. The inspector is also an isolated guy with a dark past that desperately tries to find the murderer. The sister of one of the kidnapped young ladies follows his and they are soon somewhat forced to work together. Honestly said, we have all seen such a story line somewhere else and in a better way.

On the positive side, the movie is entertaining enough to watch it until the very end. Adrien Brody acts very well and convinces as an inspector with a dark past. The location of Torino is well chosen and gives a certain kind of charm to the movie.

On the negative side, this movie is highly predictable. The identity of the killer is revealed to fast. There also some flagrant lacks of logic in the movie. The inspector acts in the most stupid way in the hospital to attract the attention of the inspector. The inspector acts in a disturbingly slow and stupid way and the sister of one of the victims even has the better ideas than him. Why didn't he try for example to contact the taxi organizations of the city to ask them to make a list of the drivers that have been working at 9:30 a.m. next to the fashion centre? He could have also asked them about a strangely acting guy with a yellow skin instead of acting strangely at a nearby hospital where he meets the killer because of a strange and not really convincing coincidence? At some point, I also have the impression that the director didn't know in what kind of direction his movie should go. In the beginning, the brutal scenes with the Japanese are cut off but in some other scenes, there is suddenly a higher amount of brutality. Another completely illogical scene is that one of the victims suddenly gets back to life and is able to talk quite a lot before she dies. After being cut all over the body, being washed in a high amount of bleach and put into a well isolated plastic bag, this event is nearly impossible. The most stupid thing about the movie is its ending. If they would have cut off the very last scene, the movie would have finished on something more original but the way it eventually really finishes is stupid and doesn't let us know anything about the final development of the main characters and also seems quite pointless.

I am really generous if I still give five points to the movie as it didn't have much action, tension, dark humour or anything special. It simply is an ordinary but somewhat entertaining movie with an acceptable acting and an interesting location to underline the positive points. You can watch it once but I wouldn't suggest a purchase at all.

  • Scary Movie 3 (2003)

This third part of the hilarious series is in my opinion the best movie. For the first time, there are several parallel stories, essentially the ones about the alien invasion and signs in the corn fields as well as the story of a deadly video tape. This adds a certain amount of creativity and diversity to the movie while the first two parts have been quite linear and superficial. Numerous films are honoured in one way or the other in this movie from "Signs" and "The ring" to "Eight Mile". The jokes are much more diversified and surprising even if some of them are still quite silly and childish but one can say that the series have really matured in here and that they find their climax in here.

Another positive fact is that many star actors are starring in this movie and not only more or less talented young actors. Pamela Anderson plays a stupid blond haired bitch, Charlie Sheen plays a pastor without faith and a broken family and the unique Canadian king of comedy Leslie Nielsen plays a hilarious and dumb president of the United States of America that makes me laugh in every scene he is acting, even in the very end and finally enjoyable ending of the movie that is not as dumb and all of a sudden as the ending of the other scary movies.

To keep it short, this movie is really entertaining and funny and not only perfect for parties or young kids that think they are very cool that they have watched such a trendy movie but also for the cinematic lunatics that adore the more professional attitude of this movie concerning the enjoyable acting and the new and surprising diversity.

  • Police Academy 3 (1986)

The third part of this unique police movie series presents us a weaker story line than the second movie but a few great surprises. Some really great and unique actors from the second movie, as the rebellious punk Zed and the shy and rather conservative Sweetchuck, come back and play the new cadets of the police academy to save the honour and future of it because one out of two police academies must close its doors do to too elevated costs. It's a brilliant idea that the charismatic villain Mauser from the second movie is also back in here and the chef of the second police academy that confronts Lessard's academy. Of course, Mahoney, Tackleberry, Hightower and all the other are also starring in this very funny and entertaining flick, this time as instructors instead of cadets as in the first movie. It's very funny to see all those weird and unique characters in those reversed roles.

As you might have noticed, this movie still has a high amount of great ideas, funny scenes and entertaining passages that puts the third part on the same level as the first two movies. The reason why this part got one point less from me is the ending. The motorboat chase scenes are simply too long and ultimately quite boring and I think that a real ending is missing as the movie ends somewhat quite suddenly after the chasing scenes. The should have cut off three minutes of the chasing scenes and added them at the end of the movie in my opinion. The movie ends as if the producers have been in a hurry or lack of imagination.

But this only negative point doesn't change a thing that this flick is perfectly entertaining and should please to anyone that has seen the first two parts. After having watched this movie for the very first time I was still really looking forward for the fourth part.

  • Yogen / Premonition (2004)

"Premonition" seems to be a rather ordinary psycho thriller in the beginning that deals with paranormal activities, family dramas and destiny. The actors are very credible and add a lot to the dark and desperate atmosphere of the movie that has no lengths and develops very well with a slow tension that rises more and more. Hiroshi Mikami convinces as desperate broken hearted man that faces destiny while the beautiful and charming Noriko Sakai does a very authentic job as a desperate and seemingly strong woman that is broken underneath the fragile surface.

But the true reason why this movie gets such a high rating from me are the last thirty minutes or so of this flick. They are mysterious and disturbing and you don't know what is nightmare or reality or both of it anymore. At this part, the tension rises to an extreme height, the images are intense, the acting is truly addicting and the whole movie gets an awaited kick of genius. For the experts of the genre, the final conclusion might not be surprising but that doesn't change that the whole development is well thought and crafted.

I would ultimately say that is movie is maybe one of the rare Asian psycho thrillers that could be understood and accepted by the masses without losing its charm and uniqueness and that's a quite unique thing which I would like to underline. The story is not too strange and slow paced but the weirdo and high amount of creativity and atmosphere is nevertheless heavily present. I would suggest this movie to anyone who would like to slowly get into this genre. It might be an intense but not too complicated introduction to a brilliant world of horror and creativity. I'm looking forward to show this movie to some of my friends to convince and tell them of my passion for mysterious Asian psycho thriller or horror flicks and will surely adore myself watching this again to discover the high amount of stunning details in the end of the film.

  • Akasia / Acacia (2003)

"Akasia" is a fairly underrated mixture of a family drama and psycho thriller from South Korea. It is a really slow paced movie but the actors all deliver an amazing job and are always authentic so that the long introduction to a more and more terrifying downward spiral of terror with a great twisted ending was worth all the wait. One must underline the great performances of the two very young actors, especially Mun Oh-bin. Another strength of the movie is the atmospheric score and the artistic factor of the movie, for example the way the camera captures the different states and forms of the mysterious Acacia tree or the different drawings the young boy makes that mostly honour the Norwegian painter Edvard Much and its masterpiece "Skrik".

This is a movie comparable to a film by David Lynch where everything starts very slowly but at a certain point, most people are losing it and it's very difficult to follow the movie in the end. Every detail is important in this movie even if some scenes might seem weird or useless at first sight. The difference in here between Daviud Lynch and Park Ki-hyeong is that the ending of the movie offers us a disturbing conclusion that explains everything that really happened once again in a very detailed way.

This movie is surely nothing for the masses and addresses to a public that is at ease with exotic and slow paced psycho thrillers that ask to use the brain and not only relax and watch. The movie convinces me because of its numerous details and artistic roots. Anyone that is into weird Asian horror movies should give this a try and might adore the movie.
