Raw, originally titled Grave, is one of the most controversial and interesting horror movies in recent memory. In times like these, it's quite difficult to push genre boundaries and shock people but this film certainly achieved both. Some critics praise this movie as being almost revolutionary, others find it repulsive and bizarre. During screenings, some people stayed until the very end, others ran out of the cinema in the middle of the movie and some had to throw up. One thing's for certain: this movie isn't for the faint-hearted. And no matter what the rating in different countries might say: this movie is only for adults. Watching this movie with your underage children, even if they are seventeen years old and very mature, would be irresponsible in my book and I'm certainly not a conservative mind. You have been warned.

Without giving too much away, this film is about cannibalism and shows some very graphic scenes. However, there is more to this movie than people eating people. The film criticizes stupid initiation rituals at universities and sends out a very clear message: If you don't like something, don't let anyone force you to like it. Stand your ground and stand by your convictions. This movie also tells us another truth: you can choose your friends but you certainly can't choose your family. I know a lot of people who blindly worship their families no matter what but this film shows that those people can be wrong. The family members of the protagonist are no examples to follow and she would have been better off without them. The third element this film criticizes is how many vegans and vegetarians still face prejudice day by day. I'm certainly everything but a militant vegan but it is important to respect the choices people make even if you might personally disagree with them. The movie shows some problems without preaching anything. This is positive. Some people might become vegans after watching this film but that isn't the intention behind it. By the way, I enjoyed some excellent salmon with capres, mushrooms and pasta after the movie.

As you can read, this film offers some interesting elements to think about. Another strong element are the settings of the movie. This French-Belgian movie takes place in the beautiful city of Liège but you won't see any of its beauty. The film introduces us to exchangeable university buildings and student apartments which add to the movie's gloomy vibe. These settings also make the movie more authentic and show how the story told in it could happen anywhere. 

The general vibe of the movie makes me think of the video game Life Is Strange. The movie takes place in a small town with a lot of students where everybody starts to know one another quickly and where something gloomy is lurking behind the surface. This film might offer some slices of life in the beginning but the sinister atmosphere really keeps it together.

The acting is also quite strong, simply because the actors don't overact and convince as fairly normal people. On the other side, it takes guts to play what the two main actresses are performing in this film. Despite the raw images, lead actresses Garance Marillier and Ella Rumpf have their own distinct personalities and remain human despite the inhuman things that are going on.

While most horror movies have weak explanations or illogical sequences, Raw comes around with a minor twist at the very end that puts things into perspective as it explains why the things we have witnessed actually happened. There are still some illogical passages here and there but let's keep in mind that this is a low-budget production and also a work of fiction. Despite some errors, I didn't have any trouble getting into this movie.

Raw isn't a particularly suspenseful or scary movie. It starts like a coming-of-age drama and slowly evolves towards a body horror movie. The movie's unique approach alone keeps its momentum going until the very end. Despite all the graphic violence, it's well-made and you just can't take your eyes off the screen.

In the end, you should watch Raw if you have a strong stomach and sympathize with the body horror and teenage drama genres. Raw is certainly a unique experience. As strange as it sounds, I liked the film for the reasons mentioned above and it certainly is a movie I won't forget anytime soon.

A few weeks ago, I had the occasion to visit Smiths Falls on what was probably the hottest day of the year. I discovered a beautiful town with intriguing attractions, an open-minded community and stunning landscapes. I talked to more people in restaurants, parks, museums and bars in one single day than in one entire year in Gatineau in the same types of locations. I'm pretty confident I will go back to this stunning town soon. I hope you will enjoy my pictures below.

Quatrième partie: du 7 au 9 octobre 2017

Ma dernière visite au Sagueny-Lac-Saint-Jean a eu lieu la semaine dernière. J'en ai profité pour admirer l'été indien et ses paysages automnaux. Cette photo a été prise proche de Beloeil, sur la route entre Montréal et Québec.

Voici une partie du Mont Saint-Hilaire. J'aimerais bien y faire quelques randonnées un jour.

Voici une des nombreuses photos prises dans la Réserve faunique des Laurentides. Celle-ci a été prise à proximité de Stoneham.

En traversant la Réserve faunique des Laurentides, on peut observer des animaux, des collines, des cours d'eau, des îles et des rivières pendant deux heures et demi. Il s'agit d'un des plus beaux trajets au Québec.

Les photos sont un peu floues vu qu'elles ont été prises à travers les fenêtres d'un autobus, mais je trouve que cet effet donne une petite touche atmosphérique qui rime bien avec l'esprit automnal au Canada. 

Le temps était légèrement pluvieux et sur le chemin du retour, il y avait même beaucoup de brouillard, ce qui a créé une atmosphère particulière. J'ai écouté des albums plutôt sombres durant le trajet qui ont été très efficaces dans ces conditions météorologiques. Mon coup de coeur était l'album Masterpiece of Bitterness du groupe de post-métal islandais Solstafir. Vous pouvez trouver ma critique de l'album sur mon blogue.

Le nombre de lacs dans la Réserve faunique des Laurentides m'impressionne à chaque fois. La nature est synonyme de liberté pour moi et marque l'esprit canadien auquel je m'identifie tant.

Cette photo a été prise proche de Laterrière qui fait partie de Ville de Saguenay. Après deux heures et demi dans la nature sauvage, on retourne dans la civilisation. Quitter la Réserve faunique des Laurentides me rend un peu nostalgique à chaque fois. C'est un des premiers endroits que j'ai découverts en arrivant au Québec pour la première fois et je reste très attaché à ce grand parc.

J'ai aussi rencontré des personnes lors de mon voyage. C'était l'anniversaire de mon ami Jean-Daniel, assis au bout à droite. Je suis assis au milieu et mon ami Charles est au premier plan. En face sont assis Anne, Anthony et Guillaume. Le souper était génial. La petite soirée karaoké était également agréable, même si celui qui nous a invité n'a même pas osé chanter. J'ai chanté It Ain't Me, Babe de Bob Dylan avec Guillaume, Away From Me de Puddle of Mudd tout seul, The Unnamed Feeling de Metallica avec Charles et enfin Engel de Rammstein avec Guillaume.

Cela faisait longtemps que je voulais manger au restaurant le plus chic de Chicoutimi et j'ai enfin pu le faire avec mon ami Charles. Le repas à l'Entre-Côte Riverin valait vraiment son prix. C'était succulent.

Voici mon ami Charles devant un ravin automnal en plein milieu de Chicoutimi. Il y a des espaces verts partout en ville. Malheureusement, on manquait de temps pour faire une randonnée plus longue et le temps n'était également pas trop favorable à une longue marche. Cela me donne une autre raison pour retourner bientôt au Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean.

Troisième partie: du premier au quatre septembre 2017

Pour mon troisième voyage, j'ai décidé de rendre visite à mon ami Charles qui avait déménagé de Longueuil à Chicoutimi pour y travailler pour CGI. Encore une fois, j'ai fait le voyage par autobus en passant par Montréal comme on peut constater sur la photo ci-dessus.

Charles et moi avons essayé un nouveau restaurant à dejeuner, le Ben & Florentine dans les Galeries du Royaume. Attention: lest resto-bars au centre commercial sont plutôt des bar-restos car ils ne servent pratiquement jamais de nourriture. Cela a donné l'occasion à Charles et moi de rencontrer Lydia, la serveuse au Burger King dont notre ami Jean-Daniel nous a parlé avec beaucoup de passion pendant des mois - je me demande toujours pourquoi.

''What fuck kind of neighborhood is this?'' - Cette citation de Twin Peaks marche bien avec le coin dans lequel Charles réside maintenant. En déjeunant, nous avons observé un accident entre deux camionnettes suivi d'intervention de la police municipale. En parlant de Twin Peaks, Charles et moi avons terminé de regarder la troisième saison de Twin Peaks. N'oubliez pas de lire mes critiques de l'émission culte sur mon blogue!

Sur le chemin du retour, j'ai encore eu le temps de visiter un petit peu la belle ville de Québec.
