Liebe Leserinnen und Leser,

Vor gut einem Jahr habe ich hier von der misslichen Lage des Naherholungsgebietes der Diepentalsprache berichtet. Aus dem einstigen viel besuchten Vorzeigegebiet ist über die Zeit ein verwahrloster Schandfleck geworden, der nur noch von einzelnen Anwohnern und Nostalgikern besucht wird. Mehrere Initiativen von Einzelpersonen oder Gruppierungen diesen Ort wieder zu altem Ruhm zu führen sind bisher scheinbar an der Lethargie verantwortlicher Institutionen und Besitzer gescheitert.

Vor einigen Wochen wollte ich mir ziemlich genau ein Jahr seit meinem letzten Besuch wieder ein aktuelles Bild der Lage machen. Einige Sachen haben sich durchaus zum Guten gewandt. Aus dem baufälligen Bootssteg ist eine Art Lounge im Freien geworden. Viele wild wuchernde Baume und Sträucher wurden gekappt, sodass die Wege jetzt etwas besser begehbar sind. Mehrere Bänke, die vor einem Jahr noch völlig zugewachsen waren, dienen jetzt wieder als Sitzgelegenheiten mit akzeptablen Aussichten.

Andere Dinge hingegen haben sich nicht geändert. Die Diepentalsperre trocknet weiter aus und versumpft immer mehr und es sieht so aus, als würde es in ein paar Jahren gar keinen See mehr, sondern nur noch einen Bachlauf geben. Die Wasserqualität des Sees nimmt weiterhin beständig ab und das Wasser sieht mittlerweile wirklich ekelerregend aus. Dadurch ist auch die Artenvielfalt am See zurückgegangen. Waren im letzten Jahr noch weit über dreißig Graugänse vor Ort, so sind es jetzt nur noch eine Handvoll. Ansonsten sieht man nur noch Enten und hin und wieder einen Reiher. Fische oder Gänse konnte ich dieses Mal im Gegensatz zum letzten Jahr gar keine erspähen. Ein weiterer Kritikpunkt ist die Instandhaltung der Außenanlagen. Der Minigolfplatz wuchert mit jedem Jahr mehr zu und das Empfangshaus ist ein Schauplatz vorangeschrittener Vermüllung.

So muss unter dem Strich gesagt werden, dass es neben einigen positiven Entwicklungen auch genauso viele negative Elemente gibt. Die Situation des Naherholungsgebietes verbessert sich daher nicht ausreichend genug. Ich werde die Situation auch in Zukunft im Auge behalten und vielleicht auch im nächsten Jahr von der aktuellen Lage berichten. Die Hoffnung auf eine positive Veränderung im Zeichen der Zusammenarbeit von Anwohnern, Besitzern und städtischen Institutionen stirbt bekanntlich zuletzt.

Hier hat man einen verwilderten Ausblick aus dem heruntergekommenen Empfangshäuschen der Minigolfanlage.

Die Bahnen der Minigolfanlage selbst sehen inzwischen so aus. Die Wege zwischen den einzelnen Bahnen sind so zugewachsen, dass sie weder begehbar noch erkennbar sind. Die zahlreichen Bänke auf der Anlage sind völlig verwildert und unbenutzbar. Die Bahnen selbst sind nicht mehr bespielbar, denn der billige Lack blättert überall ab, es entstehen überall Unebenheiten und das Unkraut sprießt aus den zahlreichen Lücken und Löchern der Bahnen.

Hier sieht man die loungeartige Anlage auf dem ehemaligen Bootssteg. Zwar sieht diese Neuerung gut aus, passt aber nicht ins Bild zwischen der versumpften Talsperre und dem völlig zugewucherten oberen Teil des Sees. So wirkt diese Neuerung eher wie Augenwischerei um die immer noch missliche Lage der Diepentalsperre zu kaschieren.

Hier ist die untere Talsperre, die an den Rändern immer weiter zuwächst und von Jahr zu Jahr kleiner wird.  

Hier ist ein Blick auf die verschmälerte untere Talsperre. Man kann mittlerweile überall ungeschützt bis ans Ufer des Sees gelangen, da Absperrungen und Zäune kaum noch existent sind, was sicherlich ein gewisses Sicherheitsrisiko, beispielsweise für spielende Kinder, birgt.

Vor einem Jahr war dieser Teil des Weges in einem fast dschungelartigen Zustand noch komplett zugewachsen. Dieser Teil des Weges um die Diepentalsperre sieht immer noch wild aus, hat sich aber im Verlauf des Jahres leicht gebessert. 

An manchen Ecken des Naherholungsgebiet findet man sogar noch ein paar schöne Hingucker. Dies liegt freilich nicht an den Verantwortlichen, sondern an der Kreativität einiger Anwohner. 

Auf dem Weg in Richtung Diepentalsperre sieht es ebenfalls verwildert aus. Bis vor etwa zehn Jahren war hier ein dichter und hochgewachsener Wald, der zugegebenermaßen ziemlich vermüllt war. Danach wurde ein Teil abgeholzt und es entstand eine Art Pferdekoppel, auf der zu Hochzeiten mal zwei Tiere zu sehen waren. Heute ist die Pferdekoppel meterhoch mit Unkraut überwuchert und der mit einigen Bäumen neu bepflanzte Teil wirkt wie ein desolater Flickenteppich. Allein die erste Aussicht auf das Naherholungsgebiet, wenn man von der Burscheider Straße kommt, wirkt alles Andere als einladend und wie ein böses Omen.

The Road to OR-Shalem is not only a highly recommendable live record but also a collection of Orphaned Land's greatest hits of their early works and therefor a great starting point for anyone who wants to discover the quintet's epic Middle Eastern folk metal and its positive message of peace, spirituality and unity. During this concert, the open-minded Israelites are supported by numerous guest vocalists and instrumentalists that add even more diversity and oomph to the sound. If compared to the DVD version of the same name, the band cut a handful of tracks and shortened some excerpts but all the essential tunes are included with seventeen diversified songs and a whopping running time of more than seventy-eight minutes. Most tracks are taken from the band's previous folk driven studio records The Never Ending Way of ORwarriOR and Mabool - The Story of the Three Sons of Seven. A few selected cuts are also taken from the group's debut Sahara and its follow-up El Norra Alila that include some doom and even death metal influences. The traditional folk tune "Bakapaim" is regularly performed by the band but can't be found on any official studio record and is an interesting additional gimmick.

The release convinces with an organic and almost perfect production where all vocalists, instruments and the crowd can be heard. The enthusiastic fans are particularly present during the calmer tracks and interludes where they masisvely sing along and manage to send shivers down my spine. The set list itself is not only representative of the band's large discography but the order is also wisely chosen. Spiritual, short and sometimes entirely acoustic pieces are followed by more epic, heavier and plugged tracks. The guest performances really add more diversity to the concert and I must particularly point out Shlomit Levi's enchanting female guest vocals and Steven Wilson's laudatio for the band as well as his appeasing guitar play. Particular song highlights are the atmospheric, progressive and surprising opener "Halo Dies" that summarizes the band's strengths and spirit perfectly, the positively liberating yet intellectually challenging "Birth of the Three", the enchanting, folk-driven and hypnotizing "The Kiss of Babylon", the traditional "Bakapaim" with its great folk chants and percussive finish, the dramatic and almost cinematic "Ocean Land" with a perfect combination of different vocalists and the chilling, intimate and relaxed "The Beloved's Cry".

Overall, The Road to OR-Shalem is a great live release for old and new fans of this band that deserves more attention, followers and respect than it already gets. The only downsides of the record are that some of the calmer and shorter tracks end up sounding a little bit too similar in my book, that the last songs of the concert aren't as energizing as the opening tunes and the fact that since this concert took place before the band's magnum opus "All Is One", the group's most essential hits are still missing on this release.

Colour me surprised! I didn't like anything Lacuna Coil released since ''Karmacode'' ten years ago but the two new songs included as an exclusive version on German gothic magazine Sonic Seducer are quite promising.

The excellent ''The House of Shame'' opens with atmospheric keyboard sounds before grim death metal growls, brutal riffs and aggressive bass guitar tones kick in. The soft female vocals are used as angelic counterpart and give an enchanting and epic atmosphere to this great track that will open the band's upcoming full length effort ''Delirium''. The perfectly balanced mixture of dark and light vibes reminds me of Leaves' Eyes minus the orchestral elements that are replaced by cinematic keyboard parts that are never too overwhelming. I hope the new album will include more songs like this one.

While the first song can be called gothic metal without a doubt, the title track from the upcoming release ''Delirium'' is more introspective but focuses as much on a dark, haunting and mysterious atmosphere with a more numbing vibe. Once again, the bass guitar play is quite dominant while the guitars sound a little bit weak. The male vocals are clean this time but still have a raw and intense tone whereas the female vocals are as enchanting and epic as in the other song. Even though the vocal performances are spot on, the chorus is too boring to make this more than just a good song. While the other track reminded me of Leaves' Eyes, this one rather recalls Evanescence and can be considered gothic rock with a more accessible and commercial production and vibe. It's a good tune but I would clearly prefer more cuts with the high quality of the other tune on the new output.

In the end, this EP put the band back on the map for me. I'm still hesitant to believe in the band's return to form and will try out the new studio album cautiously but this ''The House of Shame / Delirium'' EP is a very solid effort. Early fans of the band and supporters of female-fronted gothic and symphonic metal should purchase this nice magazine with this convincing EP.

"Hero" is one of the very best wu xia movies since the beginning of the new millennium. This movie isn't just recommendable for fans of Chinese period movies but for anyone who admires creative cinema.

Zhang Yimou's masterpiece convinces with an unusual story line. The movie focuses on the mysterious meeting between a prefect who claims to have defeated the empire's three most dangerous assassins and the careful, clever and philosophical emperor himself. The first third of the movie explains the prefect's version of the story. The second third focuses on the emperor's analysis of the story. The last third finally reveals what really happened.

If you think that the movie might be repetitive because the same story is told from three different perspectives, you are wrong. Each story builds upon the previous version and only adds new elements. This unusual structure adds a mysterious and even surreal vibe to the movie. This film comes around with a few clever twists and turns but the epic conclusion reveals everything the viewer needs to know.

The mysterious and philosophical message and vibe of the movie is supported by one of the best cinematographies ever done in cinema. Zhang Yimou works a lot with different colours and their meanings such as white for innocence, red for passion, green for hope, blue for dignity or black for darkness. The different settings and landscapes also add to the movie since key scenes take place inside a bare palace that represents isolation, a blue lake that represents spirituality or a hot desert that represents loneliness. The settings and costumes are in perfect harmony with the slow and precise camera work and a calm and spiritual soundtrack. The fighting scenes blend in very well and have a surreal touch where mental strength is much more efficient than physical power. The different characters are flying through bamboo forests or over peaceful lakes and are constantly using their natural surroundings to fight their opponents. This movie symbolizes the harmony of men and nature, underlines the efficiency of mental strength and delivers a message of community and peace where the greater good for an entire empire is more significant than the fate of a single person, family, location, race or ideology. These messages are delivered in a mostly grounded and intellectual way and only the final scenes feel a little bit melodramatic and slightly pathetic.

In the end, "Hero" is much more than a simple martial arts movie. It's one of the most intellectually, philosophically and visually profound movies of the new millennium. This film has a heart, soul and different messages that are at least interesting to analyze, empathize with and understand no matter if you end up agreeing or disagreeing with them. Anybody who considers him- or herself intellectual should have watched this unique masterpiece.
