    SerdceSerdce Timelessness (2014)

Serdce is a highly talented progressive metal quartet from the Belarusian capital of Minsk. Even though the band comes from one of the most isolated places in the Western world, these four men have been working together since 1997, and have released two demos as well as four professional full length efforts. The band’s musicianship is technically impressive and one can clearly hear that the quartet is especially influenced by North American bands such as Atheist, Cynic, and Dream Theater from the US, or Martyr and UneXpect from Canada. The band also recalls some original European progressive extreme metal outfits like Coroner from Switzerland, Pestilence from the Netherlands, and maybe even Le Grand Guignol from Luxembourg. In comparison to several other progressive extreme metal bands, Serdce clearly emphasizes original songwriting, including entirely progressive and technically challenging bits and pieces, mixed with diverse influences from multiple genres.

On the band’s most recent fourth studio effort, Timelessness, the quartet has crafted a profound, calm, and retrospective work reminding here and there of meditative Indian and Middle Eastern folklore as performed by Kartikeya or Orphaned Land, including the use of duduks and jew’s harps. In the same vein, Serdce convinces with laid back and psychedelic progressive rock sounds driven by appeasing guitar melodies and thick, almost numbing keyboard layers from the sixties and seventies in the key of Genesis, Pink Floyd, and Yes. The playful quartet also includes some challenging and sometimes rather hectic instrumental parts with clipped high guitar notes, fast and hysterical keyboard passages, and some vivid jazz fusion carried by saxophones that recall the likes of Dream Theater and Pestilence, among others. Sometimes, calmer passages can be contrasted by passionate extreme metal outbursts with beefy riffs, fast rhythm sections, and vocals that may suddenly turn from calm, melodic, and almost thin to loud and aggressive, or vice versa. While a few songs may have oddly surprising twists and turns, most tracks sound perfectly coherent, sophisticated, and well-structured. The balance between deep atmospheric breaks, insane instrumental masturbation, and liberating violence is nearly perfect, and should please all sorts of progressive metal fans. The whole record definitely never gets boring or pointless despite a a fitting running time of almost sixty-six minutes. To me, this clever mixture of genres sounds fresh and timeless at the same time.

It’s always difficult to name outstanding tracks on progressive metal records, but a song that perfectly represents all three sides of the band (laid back progressive rock passages, vivid and extensive instrumental parts, and furious extreme metal eruptions) is the well done epic “Last Faith”, the longest song here, which nearly reaches the ten-minute mark. If you like this track as an appetizer, you are going to adore the entire record, and hence the band’s entire oeuvre. If you care for Serdce’s calmer side of fragile progressive rock ambiance and smooth keyboard, piano, and saxophone sounds, lay down on your bed, close your eyes, put your headphones on, and discover the perfectly entitled “Loss Of Feelings Or Feelings Of Loss”. If you prefer the more technical and violent side of the band, you should try out the apocalyptically menacing and noisy “Quasar”, where the listener is treated like a punching bag for destructive atmosphere, negative energy, and unconventional songwriting. This track may be the most challenging on the record, but it’s also one of the most fascinating for me.

The band pretty much succeeds at everything it tries here. Timelessness is an outburst of creativity, diversity, and emotion. All main and guest musicians and singers have their shining moments and give their very best. The record has fluid transitions and feels coherent from beginning to the end despite entertainingly radical experiments. The production is surprisingly good – the label gave its best to promote this underground group, and even the cover artwork and booklet look great. The only little thing the band could still improve on is the development of a more unique sound. I hope and believe that one day, fans, experts and reviewers might not say that Serdce sounds like Dream Theater, Pestilence, or UneXpect, but that some other brand new contemporary band sounds like Serdce.Check out the album and spread the word of one of last year’s very best progressive metal albums!

    Go Hull Go!

    Go Hull Go!

    Go Hull Go!

    Go Hull Go!

    Go Hull Go!

    Go Hull Go!

Go Hull Go!

  • The Ottawa Senators haven't been very constant so far this season but they still have a tiny chance to make the playoffs this year. I went to Canadian Tire Center on November 6, 2014 when the Senators won against Minnesota Wild (3:0), on November 8, 2014 when they lost against the Winnipeg Jets in a shootout (1:2), on November 9, 2014 when they lost against their biggest rivals and the theam which I despise the most, the Toronto Maple Leafs (3:5), on December 7, 2014 when they won against the Vancouver Canucks in overtime (4:3) and on December 11, 2014 when they lost against the Los Angeles Kings (3:5).

Even though the tickets are extremely expensive when the Montreal Canadians come to town, I absolutely wanted to see the game between the Senators and the Canadians last Thursday, on January 15, 2014. The last time I had gone to witness a game between both teams had been towards the end of last season on April 4, 2014 and it had been a blast. The Montreal Canadiens had won a dramatic game against the Ottawa Senators (4:7) and I had been very happy with the result as I still had been supporting the Montreal Canadiens back in the days as I had been less familiar with the Ottawa Senators, its players and its fan culture.

As you all know, I like both teams and I'm also a big fan of the Arizona Coyotes but I decided to support the home team and crowd last Thursday. With an estimated seventy percent of the crowd supporting the Montreal Canadiens, I thought that the Ottawa Senators needed my support more to keep their small playoff chances alive. In addition to that, I had felt rather ashamed of the Montreal Canadiens fans last time as most of them had already been quite drunk when they had arrived at the game and had constantly been insulting the home team. The Ottawa Senators delivered this time, outplayed the Canadiens and won by a 4:1 score. The atmosphere at Canadian Tire Center was amazing, the game was highly entertaining and I had a really good time. Here are a couple of pictures from the game as well as a video with the most important highlights. I will be back at Canadian Tire Center for the game between the Ottawa Senators and the Arizona Coyotes by the end of the month.

  • Ария / Aria – Через все времена / Through All Times

January 15, 2015 in Reviews by Sebastian Kluth

    AriaAria Through All Times (2014)

    Reviewed by Sebastian Kluth

(Aria) is a criminally underestimated heavy metal band from Moscow that has the same reputation in Russia as Iron Maiden and the likes have worldwide. The band deserves this sort of recognition, as Aria has been around since 1985 when playing this kind of Western music was still officially frowned upon by the Soviet Union. Aria broke the ice by being a pioneer band of that genre. Coincidentally, a certain Mikhail Gorbachev became the leader of the Soviet Union in the same year, and would successively introduce important changes leading to the end of the Cold War six years later.

Twenty-nine years, eleven studio albums, ten compilation records, and seven live releases after its foundation, Aria is still the most important heavy metal band in its home country. Recently, the band has opened toward the international market and has toured in Germany in 2012 and even in Canada and the United States of America in 2013. Collaborations with Danish brewery Faxe and American motorcycle manufacturer Harley Davidson have also helped in spreading the name of the band. If you care for traditional heavy metal music, then you have no excuse for not knowing most of Aria’s albums as essential classics. Three years ago, Aria changed vocalists and introduced the young and talented singer Mikhail Zhitnyakov to the band. Since then, the band has released the strong studio albumФеникс (Phoenix), its first in more than five years, the incredible Live In Studio release, and the majestic live album (In The Yellow Circle Arena), which is probably the band’s best live record ever. Aria seems to be rejuvenated, and has been quite active over the past few years. It’s no surprise then that the band has already come around with a new studio album entitledЧерез все времена (Through All Times).

Aria has always been faithful to the traditional hard rock and heavy metal sound without sounding repetitive, uninspired, or outdated. When other bands tried to experiment with groove, industrial, or progressive metal, Aria had always held the heavy metal banner high. Still, the band doesn’t sound like one of those juvenile revivalist bands that tries deperately to sound “old school”. The crystal clear production of the new record fits modern standards in a positive way. The lyrics here and there are inspired by contemporary books, movies, and television series. In a few moments, there are even a few modern sounds in the form of symphonic keyboard sounds, but these are always decently placed in the background. They only become obvious in the opening of “Город” (“City”), where one could even describe them as eerie lounge sounds that slowly introduce a mellow, melancholic, and hypnotizing heavy metal track with a softly sung but memorable chorus cracking the seven-minute mark. It’s the kind of traditional heavy metal song with a slightly experimental touch that could also have come from one of the last four Iron Maiden records.

“Блики солнца на воде” (“Glare At The Sun”) is another of these more experimental songs. It opens with slow guitar riffs that almost sound like a country rock song or the score of a western. The verses are slow and sound really cool, while the pre-chorus and chorus are heavier and feature thick guitar sounds and high vocals. This “country metal” song meets a slow atmospheric middle section with galloping bass guitar and drums before the guitar solo leads back to the powerful chorus. While the song has obvious traditional heavy metal elements, it sounds like nothing I have ever heard before because of its hard rock and country influences, which I think give it a very cool and almost cinematic mood. I can envision a gunslinger riding through the wasteland and coming to a town in the Wild West while listening to this song.

Iron Maiden has always been an obvious reference for this band. In the beginning, Aria almost copied passages from that group’s classic records, but as time has passed, this worship has turned into a less obvious and more creative inspiration. While Iron Maiden tends to write overlong tracks with pointless soloing nowadays, Aria still manages to write consistent, enthralling, and precise short to mid-length songs with lengths between four and a half and seven and a half minutes. The opening title song Через все времена” (“Through All Times”) has everything a heavy metal fan can ask for: a charismatic and dominating bass guitar line, powerful staccato-drumming, and aggressive and impulsive riffs that meet breaks with mid-tempo twin-guitar harmonies and solos. The whole thing is crowned by vocals that find the right balance between grounded power and a few enthusiastically sung higher notes. This track is a strong candidate for the best heavy metal song of the year.

The rest of the album is good average heavy metal that doesn’t disappoint, but it can’t keep up with the explosive opening trio. Most songs sound like standard heavy metal tracks, but in Aria’s case we are still talking about a high standard. The band keeps on varying its approach, as we can see on the laid-back and plodding ballad “Точка невозврата” (“Point Of No Return”) (which isn’t really my cup of tea), the slow-paced and eerie epic “Зов бездны” (“Call Of The Deep”) (which is maybe a little bit too tame and long for its own good), and the short stomper “Ангелы неба” (“The Angels Of Heaven”), which sounds like a slower and more atmospheric version of Iron Maiden’s “Two Minutes To Midnight”.

In the end, what we have is a below average Aria album, an above average traditional heavy metal release, and probably the best traditional heavy metal album of the year 2014, all at the same time. Aria keeps a dying genre alive, and they do it with a diverse song writing approach without losing the genre’s clear guiding line, a solid dose of honest enthusiasm, and a rejuvenated sound in terms of production, keyboard layers, and vocals. Fans of the band should be satisfied with this record, while new fans could start off better with the Live In Studio effort that will blow you away.

  • Dear readers of my blog,

let's start the new year with a video game review! Here are my thoughts on ''The Vanishing of Ethan Carter''. Do you know this game? What are your thoughts on it? Please leave a comment below this article and share it with your friends.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter (2014)

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter (2014)

I would like to keep you updated about different new video games I have been trying out recently. The first game I would like to introduce to you is entitled ''The Vanishing of Ethan Carter'' which was released on computer in September 2014 and which will be released on PlayStation 4 in 2015. The adventure game was created by independent Polish studio The Astronauts.

The game tells the story of a detective with paranormal capacities who can remodel murders with little information who received fan post from a boy named Ethan Carter who observed paranormal activities in his village. When the contact abruptly ended, the detective realized that something must have happened to Ethan Carter and so he visits the fictional and abandoned Red Creek Valley. The detective finds traces of Ethan Carter and his family but also of several cruel murders that happened in and around the village. It seems as if Ethan Carter's family or the entire village had been possessed by something evil that made them commit unspeakable crimes. The detective wants to find out more about that supernatural presence and what happened to Ethan Carter and the other vanished inhabitants.

Among the game's strengths is the diversified open world environment in a fictional village somewhere in the United States of America. From a first person view, the gamer explores at will an unkempt cemetary, a deserted dam, a dense forest, a creepy mine, old roads and railway stations and an abandoned village with different buildings.

The graphics are detailed and realistic and one can observe both bright colours and darker shades that add to the psychological horror atmosphere of the game. A highlight are definitely the graphics when the main character gets to know a story that is briefly taking place in space. The look of the space shuttle, the planets and the stars is absolutely stunning.

The realistic sound, the fitting soundtrack and the slightly twisted story line around some criminal and supernatural investigations add to the dense atmosphere of this adventure game that gets more and more gripping.

The only negative elements are the slight lack of action and true diversity in the different investigations and the rather short length of the game which can be played in a little bit less than eight hours. Minor disadvantages are the fact that one can get literally get lost in the open world environment which looks indeed beautiful but mostly pointlessly empty and a rather random auto-save system where the player doesn't always know when the game was saved last.

In the end, this adventure game is still highly recommendable for those who like atmospheric and paranormal stories, detailed crime investigations and realistic environments with breathtaking graphics. In fact, I've never seen better graphics so far in a video game than in this one and this alone is worth the purchase of this surprisingly great independent game.
